Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1Corinthians 15:1-4
The above verses tell us what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is. This Gospel is what we need to believe in order to be forgiven of our sins and spend eternity with Jesus, God. I had been told the Gospel at different times in my life. Unfortunately I didn't believe it.The last time some one told me how to be saved from my sins was when My fiance (who is still my wife to this day) and I sat down to speak with the pastor who later married us. He told me the Gospel and I remember thinking about the other times I had heard the gospel and thought "It is for real." But the words of the Gospel didn't take root in my heart so I only believed for a short time, a year or so. Jesus tells us in the Gospels that this type of person is the seed sown on the rock. Jesus tells us in the parable of "The Seed and the Sower" that those sown on the rock believe until temptation or persecution come then they fall away from belief. Because the Word of God didn't take root in their heart they were not saved from their sins and baptized by the Holy Spirit. From 1988 to 2001 that was me. For the first year or so of our marriage I walked and talked like a believer, but wasn't a one. I stayed lost in my sin and after while fell back into my sinful ways.
Than 9/11/2001 happened. I was at work after that day and heard people talking about how the fall of the towers was foreseen in the book of Revelation. So out of curiosity I started to read Revelation and God worked in my heart and after Revelation I started to read the rest of the Bible starting in Genesis.
It was some time in late September or early October of 2001, and part way through Genesis, that I truly believed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have been repenting of my sins and reading the Bible ever since.
I still have problems, like finances, that I had when I was lost, but now I know that God is there to help me through them. I love God and His Word the Bible. My life with my wife and my children is better and I am leaving my sins one by one as I grow with God.
But what says it? The word is near you, even in your mouth, and in your heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. For the scripture says, Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed. Romans 10:8-11
All God asks of us in return for Him dying for our sins is that we believe in our heart that Jesus died for us and was raised again. It seems so easy in words ,but in truth it is the hardest and most important decision of our lives.
